In the last two weeks, Spanish citizens abroad have realized the power they have in choosing the formation of parliamentary groups after the repeal of the requested vote. Hundreds of votes in one direction or another can mean assigning a seat to one party or another and this power of influence is even greater in regional elections in those Autonomous Communities such as Galicia, Asturias or Castilla y León with a large number of emigrants abroad. The seat won by the Popular Party over the Socialist Party in the Community of Madrid has put on the table how much that scarce 10% of participation by the Spanish population abroad who vote in the general elections can affect and shows us how important it would be to soon recover, if not surpass, the traditional 30% participation of the diaspora.
This increase would force political parties to take much more care of a population that has been neglected for many decades. The path shown is clear, but they must keep in mind that not only can they come to ask Phone Number Database us for our votes, but they will have to start including us in their programs and, more importantly, they will have to realize that in the external network there is a high level of political activism. The importance of soon recovering, if not exceeding, the traditional 30% participation of the diaspora Let them tell the PSOE, PP or SUMAR through their groups and circles and it would be brave for their political parties to offer their militancy a position on the electoral lists. These positions on the lists should offer a real possibility of being elected and thus have real representation during a legislature in the Congress of Deputies or in the Senate.
We no longer have any use for the tricks of those deputies who lived abroad for one or two years and who try to sell us as emigrants. Emigrant is something else. We need representation in Madrid that knows first-hand what it means to deal with consulates that work with fewer resources than they need or that do not ensure that their children have access to learning their language on equal terms to those who live in large capitals in the outside (due to the lack of Alce classrooms). We know that the incorporation of our requests in the electoral programs are usually mere cosmetic touches and they try to convince us that they take into account us, the 2.8 million Spanish citizens abroad. We could have before us the possibility of an electoral repetition and then none of these parties will have any excuses for not drawing up lists in accordance with the Spanish population in 2024.
